Some time last week, Leo and I decided to check out a cafe over the weekend. Since I work on Sundays, Saturday is the only full day we can spend together and I usually prefer it if we can actually leave the house and do something, so off we went to Morning Glory, here in Canberra, which we’ve heard rave reviews about from some friends.
We were excited to go there for several reasons -
It’s in the NewActon area, which is a new, bougie, trendy area where lots of nice restaurants are located. We’ve gone past a lot
they’re opened by the people behind XO, which is a popular southeast asian-inspired restaurant - which ALSO has lots of good reviews
The space inside Morning Glory was lush and beautiful and we both really loved the use of wood especially with the wavy wood feature built over the kitchen/coffee/register space in the first photo.
Because it was such a sunny day, we chose to sit outside to enjoy the great weather.
Their day menu wasn’t as extensive as some cafes but I appreciated that because it narrowed down which item to pick.
I ended up picking the Baked eggs and Leo had the eggs Benedict with miso cured ocean trout with a side of char siu bacon.
My baked eggs were great! The sauce was spicy and flavorful and the chicken+veal meatballs were juicy. The thick chunk of bread was PERFECT for it and sooo satisfying to eat with the sauce.
Leo’s dish was also pretty good and I liked the miso cured trout because it was less salty than the usual smoked salmon. The char siu bacon was amazing!!! The cut of bacon they used was just thick enough and the char on it made it just a bit crispy YUM.
For drinks, I got a regular soy latte when I wanted the kaya latte but they ran out of kaya. Leo got a Vietnamese iced coffee cocktail which was basically coffee + alcohol haha.
Overall, I’m glad we gave Morning Glory a try because we enjoyed the meal but we both agreed as we left that service was really NOT great.
We chose to sit outside, which I think was the mistake because the service staff weren’t particularly attentive to those of us outside. The drinks alone took 15 minutes to get to us and when they finally served them, the waiter did apologise for the delay because they were swamped.
They were not very busy with customers outside so I’m assuming that they were swamped with the crowd inside.. which was not a great excuse for the inattentive service.
That said, we’d still return to try out other things, especially from the dinner menu. And hopefully then, we’d have a better experience with the service as well.
After eating, we walked around the area because I wanted to take some photos in my dress and we found several nice spots to take them, especially on such a beautiful day! As always, Leo did a pretty good job considering how awkward I am in front of the camera once I see people nearby.
It was also great weather to wear this dress because it was warm enough in the sun but once we were in the shade, it was definitely a bit too cold for me.
NewActon has several art installations in the area and this was just one of them that I was standing in front of for a photo - something about time I think? It’s a lovely area to be in and we’ll definitely be back to try another place soon!
