Spending time with my parents in Canberra

So this post is a bit late but just over a month ago, my parents came to visit us here in Canberra. This isn’t their first time here but it was basically their first official time here because they actually spent more than 1 day this time. Last year, they were here for a day and had lunch with Leo’s parents WITHOUT me haha.

We knew about their trip since last year when I first reached Canberra because my mom accidentally ruined the surprise. Anyway, it all worked out since we got a place with a spare room and could save them the money and trouble of booking a hotel or airbnb.

Initially, we thought that them being here for 2 weeks was going to be too much free time but they ended up with a packed schedule because my dad’s best friend lives here and is retired so he had heaps of time to take them out for coffee and stuff.

I didn’t really think that I would miss my parents that much since I WhatsApp them everyday, but spending time with them really made me miss them.

And I’m happy I made this little vlog to remember our trip :-)

Our day trip to the coast

Leo and I knew that we definitely had to bring my parents to the coast while they were here and it didn’t disappoint at all. Hyams beach was just beautiful, with the amazing white sand and clean shoreline.

We stayed overnight in Jervis Bay which is a little town with a fantastic view of the ocean and great fish and chips.

10/10 would recommend driving to the coast if you can!

Bowral

We stopped in Bowral on the way back to Canberra from the coast and had an amazing pie and apple crumble at a little cafe called Girls & Boys Cafe.

We also stopped by Dirty Jane’s, which is a massive vintage warehouse. The whole space is filled with little booths and display cabinets with people’s vintage finds for sale. There was an amazing range of items like furniture, film cameras, toys, medals, jewellery and even some designer wallets.

It was truly a treasure trove and if we weren’t in a hurry to get back to Canberra, we would have definitely spent several hours wandering around marvelling at all the trinkets there.

I held off not buying everything I picked up and ooh-ed over and only left the place with the beautiful shell-shaped caviar dish.

Catching up with Leo’s family

Of course, we also met up with Leo’s family several times during their trip and we had dinners at an Italian place, at their family home and a chinese restaurant in Dickson on my parent’s last night in Canberra.

My parents had more alcohol than they usually do in an entire year which resulted in lots of laughs and fun.

I’m so glad everyone had a good time together and it just makes me so happy that both our families get along so well.

ON FILM: An afternoon at Huskisson

The weather that weekend was perfect.

The weather that weekend was perfect.

Hello again! We finally collected the film photos we sent to the shop today after 10 days and I can’t wait to share them all! They have been scanned so nicely that they’re the sharpest I’ve EVER seen and I’m loving so many of them. But I’ve included some non-film photos in here as well.

A few weeks back during the last long weekend of the year (till Christmas), Leo and I spent a nice sunny afternoon in Huskisson, just less than 2.5 hours away from Canberra. It was a last minute decision to drive there and I’m so glad we did! It was our first “road trip”, if you can consider it that.

It was lovely to spend such a sunny afternoon on a beautiful beach and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. But don’t let the sunshine fool you, in the shade and when the wind blew, it was really cold.

But just before looking for a spot on the beach, we had lunch at The Huskisson which is a hotel right along the beach. It was full of families and groups having lunch while overlooking the view and we joined in with our calamari and fish and chips to share. Leo chose this spot precisely for the fish and chips and they didn’t disappoint!

The cleanest beach I’ve ever been on!

We reached a nice and peaceful area of the beach just walking about 10 minutes away from the main town. The sand on the beach was so fine between our toes and so soft, it almost felt like we were walking on powder instead.

Leo made me go into the ocean and it was SO cold! I just had to walk right in and dunk myself to get myself used to it. The waves were pretty strong but it was nice to stand around in the crystal clear water, feeling the waves crash onto my legs repeatedly - almost like a massage of sorts.

I was smiling in the photo but I was just masking the pain I felt from the freezing water haha.

Also - not usually one for bright colours but I’m loving this Seafolly set I got in this pretty coral shade! Can’t wait to get back into exercising so I can actually do it justice.

We laid on the beach for a while, watching people go by. We also very much enjoyed watching all the happy doggos running around on the beach - it was so cute.

It got quite cold in the shade soon because the sun got hidden behind the trees we were under and we packed up to head back.

But before heading back up to the main area, we spent quite a while checking out this huge space filled with craters and rockpools.

I loved looking into the shallow pools filled with little corals and shells, although we were on the hunt to see if we could spot something cool in one of them, like an octopus.

We did eventually find a deeper pool that looked like it had some creature hiding in the shadows of the crevices but I couldn’t get a photo of it.

Leo took these 2 shots of me that I really like and he did such an amazing job with the framing while I did a terrible job taking a photo of him. I always give him a hard time because I think he doesn’t take nice photos of me but in all honesty, it’s usually my fault because I can’t help getting super awkward once he tries to take a photo of me.

And the worst part is that he is a sweetheart and always more than willing to be an “insta BF” but I just ruin it by getting awkward. These turned out well because there was no one else around haha.

And after cleaning up and getting an ice cream, we went back to the car to get a slight headstart on our trip back because we didn’t want to deal with heavy traffic when the rest of the people decide to leave.

Leo and I had such a good day together, savouring the long weekend and I definitely want to go back there once it gets warmer, which I guess is now, since Spring is officially here and the weather has been sunnier and hotter during the day. We’ll just have to figure out a weekend when we’re free once we settle in to our new place! And that’s a whole other post. I’ll probably go into more detail about the process and tips because it was AN ORDEAL finding a place to rent.

Till the next post!

My first post!

Hello everyone!

And by everyone I mean Leo and my bff - because I know that they’d definitely be reading this. Leo was the one who’s been asking me to create a blog and S has been super supportive of it and has already said she hopes I get famous so she can be the bff of an.. “influencer”. NOT EVEN.

All I’m hoping for is that whoever stumbles upon this site enjoys the photos/videos I post here and it’ll give them a bit of insight to what life is like in Canberra, because I know many people blog about living in Sydney or Melbourne but I haven’t been able to find many blogs about things to do here.

So before I get into details, I’m going to start off by posting this vlog I made of my first 5 weeks here. It’s nothing super exciting, but we did spend some time viewing apartments during the weekend. And honestly this whole apartment viewing has been a PAIN but that’s a post for another time. I’m hoping to talk about the process and maybe tips if we eventually get a place l o l.

We also checked out the lake nearby on the one sunny weekend right as we were heading into Spring where it got warmer than usual. But reaching the lake, it was super windy and not warm at all!! It was still lovely and a beautiful day out where we took heaps of film photos while stalking the ducks around haha.

Enjoy the video :)
